Inside MIT – Exploring the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the USA

A while ago, as some of you may know, I took part in a student exchange program in the United States for almost six months. During that time, I had the opportunity to travel to Boston, where I met a Japanese student named Kento, who was studying in the city. Fortunately for us, Kento was also enrolled at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), one of the most prestigious technology and research universities in the United States and the world. For anyone passionate about technology, MIT is a dream school — a place they aspire to study at when pursuing education abroad.

An Overview of MIT: Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA

Kento was such a charming person — talented in both academics and sports. I still remember how he greeted us with a polite Japanese bow the first time we met. The only “downside” was that he was so brilliant that, over a meal with him and two of his housemates, the three of them ended up discussing the chemical reactions of prawn crackers when dropped into boiling oil!

MIT is world-renowned as a cradle of excellence, producing and nurturing some of the most influential talents on the planet. According to official statistics, the university boasts around 81 Nobel Prize laureates, 52 recipients of the U.S. National Medal of Science, and 45 Rhodes Scholars, along with many other prestigious accolades.

Among its distinguished alumni are Sir Tim Berners-Lee — the inventor of the World Wide Web — and Ray Tomlinson, the pioneer who sent the very first email between two computers via the ARPANET network, both of whom stand as shining examples of MIT’s extraordinary legacy.

Experience at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)

He took us on a tour of MIT, and I was truly impressed by the campus’s distinctive architecture and immense size. The university is home to numerous robots and cutting-edge research programs. Thanks to Kento’s student ID, we were able to explore the inside of several buildings, which most visitors don’t get to see. The campus was vast — I took plenty of photos, though sadly I can’t post them all here as the image quality back then wasn’t the best, and uploading too many might slow down the website.

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology stands out with more than 100 public art installations and numerous buildings featuring unique, almost surreal architectural designs, such as the Ray and Maria Stata Center and the Maclaurin Buildings.

Exploring these areas, visitors can’t help but feel a deep sense of awe and admiration for this remarkable blend of science, technology, and art. Almost everywhere you wander on the MIT campus in the United States, you’ll encounter bold, unconventional, and highly creative elements — as if they belong to another world entirely.

Besides academic facilities, MIT also boasts impressive sports amenities. I still recall visiting the swimming pool, which was almost the size of one in a professional American stadium. On the day of our visit, the campus was bustling — not just with professors, lecturers, students, and staff, but also tourists, parents, and prospective students hoping to study in the United States.

Seeing MIT reminded me of a high school friend who excelled academically and even participated in a Robocon competition. I couldn’t help but think that if he had had the chance to study here, he might have gone even further in his career, though he is already successful and working in his dream field today.

After MIT, Kento took us across the street to visit the world-renowned Harvard University. Unfortunately, as he wasn’t a student there, we couldn’t enter, but simply standing outside and taking in the atmosphere was memorable enough.

Visiting these two iconic institutions reignited my dream of studying in the United States. Although that dream didn’t come true for me, I hope that young people today will seize the opportunity to travel, explore, and perhaps study — even if it’s just for a short course — in such an advanced and inspiring environment as the U.S.
